Wairua Sinfonietta

Wairua is a Māori word from Aotearoa, New Zealand, meaning “spirit.” In te reo Māori, “wai” means water, and “rua” means two, together conveying a shared essence. Wairua Sinfonietta embodies this unity through music. The term reflects a deep connection to spirit, beautifully represented in our logo, symbolising the circle of life.

  • Sophie Li, double bass

Hi, I’m Sophie Li and I am 11 years old. I’ve been learning double bass for 3 years and playing in HSM Symphony Orchestras and Concert Band for two years. I love playing double bass because I enjoy the deep and rich sound that immerses me in the world of music. Besides double bass, I play drums and piano as I have a passion for Classical and Jazz music. When I’m not playing, I like playing sports and playing with my pets.

Elizabeth Lau - Artistic Director, Founder

I am thrilled to introduce the Wairua Youth Sinfonietta, a project that has been close to my heart from the very beginning. As the founder and Music Director, I’ve had the privilege of working with an incredible group of musician friends and colleagues, alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, some of whom are currently based overseas. This venture wouldn’t have been possible without their unwavering support.

My wish is that through this project, we can open doors for younger generations to experience the joy and power of music, while using music to uplift and strengthen our society. Ultimately, we are striving towards a better world for the future.

I am excited to kickstart this event with the founding members and our team of musicians, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and support that has made this possible. We are also thrilled to support a charity aligned with our vision: the Tironui Music Trust, which offers a fully funded instrumental music program, providing opportunities for those who might otherwise not have the chance to learn an instrument. Through this, we aim to foster diligence, confidence, and a lifelong love of music.
